Challenge

A leading manufacturer of gas and oil fired boilers and boiler systems in Korea was using Asbestos Fiber Gaskets to seal the exhaust cover and O-rings to seal the burner housing. Not only the solid gaskets failed to give 100% sealing on flange surfaces and relaxed over time. These gaskets were also expensive due to unique shape and size of flanges. Further, asbestos is not environment friendly and the customer wanted to move to more environment friendly option. Loctite 5702 was successfully tested for this application.

Solution

Loctite 5702 is a high performance Silicone Gasket Maker that forms tough, flexible gaskets directly on the flange. It offers excellent adhesion on oily surfaces and resists vibrations and surges.

Applied in liquid form, Loctite silicone gasketing compounds cover surface imperfections and seal potential leak paths which cure to create 100% sealing between mating flanges.

Loctite silicone gasketing compounds are designed to withstand environmental conditions and common industrial fluids. They can be dispensed in desired shape and sizes and reduce the need for keeping high inventories. Compared to conventionally used pre-formed gaskets. The dispensing operation can be automated to reduce application costs and improve process efficiency.

Results

Loctite 5702 passed all customer tests successfully. With 100% contact between mating flanges it created a reliable and durable seal that did not creep, relax or deteriorate. The gasket cost per assembly was also reduced. The customer did not have to maintain inventory of different gaskets as Loctite 5702 could be dispensed in required shape and sizes.
