• Supplier assembles wheel sets for train wagons and overhead crane wheels

SITUATION

• Train bogie wheels are assembled with a heavy interference fit: typically 0.009" for a 9" dia shaft

• A press-on tonnage of between 65-110 tonnes must be achieved

• Consequences of poor assembly can be expensive or even catastrophic

• If metal pick-up (galling) occurs during assembly, the components are scrapped

• Lubricants give lubricity during assembly but fail to promote adhesion or prevent moisture ingress over prolonged periods
