Loctite® 660 Retains Bearing to Gear Housing Reliably
Challenge
A leading manufacturer of industrial cleaning equipment in India developed a new model of portable cleaning machines. The drive bearing needed to be mounted in the cast iron gear housing. As the Gear housing is cast, it is very difficult to maintain the tolerances. Machining the bearing seat area involved high machining cost and time. The un-machined seat area had gaps to 0.2mm.
Solution
Loctite 660 Quick Metal Retaining compound was used along with 7649 Primer to retain bearing to housing and Loctite 242 used to lock the screws of gear to housing.
Loctite retaining compounds fill the “inner space” between components and cure to form a strong precision assembly. It increases the shear strength of press- and slip-fitted cylindrical assemblies.
Loctite 660 Quick Metal is a creamy, non-running gel that is applied onto cylindrical parts to fill surface imperfections and repair worn areas. It does not contain metal, but once assembled hardens to a strength that often doubles that of a press fit.
Loctite 242 is a medium strength threadlocker that locks and seals threaded fasteners.
Results
Eliminates needs for expensive machining and the parts can be used as received with relaxed tolerances up to to 0.2 mm. Loctite 660 creates 100% metal-to-metal contact between the mating parts increasing the load carrying capability as well as preventing the area from fretting corrosion.
