Loctite® 277 exceeds customer test requirements

Challenge

Nifty Lifts, Australia makes Hydraulic Lifts for forestry, mining and construction use. Base turn table of the lift holds boom & bucket and is subjected to severe vibrations, impacts & shear loads. Structural bolts (16 mm) on the turn table loosened under these conditions. Nifty used nyloc nuts to prevent vibrational loosening of these bolts but even nyloc nuts failed to retain clamp load over long periods. Bolts had to be checked and re-torqued frequently as any premature failure can result in accidents.

Solution

Customer choose Loctite 277 Threadlockers for the job.

Loctite 277 is a slow curing, high strength threadlocker that locks fasteners up to 36 mm. It protects threads from rust and corrosion. It is removable with heat and hand tools.

Applied as a liquid drop to the threads of a fastener, Loctite threadlockers cure to a hard thermoset plastic that fills the thread gap, locks the threads together, preventing unwanted movement or loosening, leaks, and corrosion.

Invented by Loctite Corporation, as a revolutionary method to lock and seal threaded fasteners, Loctite threadlockers are commonly used in a range of applications - from delicate electronic components to heavy construction equipment.

Results

Loctite 277 does what nylock nuts can’t - they filll the gap between threads and locks the threads together - creating a unitized assembly that does not loosen under severe vibrations and thermal cycling.

  • Bolts retain clamp load under severe conditions - no loosening.
  • Protects threads from rust and corrosion.
  • No re-torquing of bolts needed - creating savings in maintenance costs and time and more importantly improving the reliability and safety of the equipment.
  • Slow-curing property of Loctite 277 allows time needed for phased assembly.
  • Application cost per bolt is much lower than nylock nuts.
